EB and Mae

We are finally in Birmingham and attempting to get ready for bed, but a certain little girl doesn’t seem very tired. She’s actually quite enjoying exploring our hotel room. Her favorite feature is the full length mirror in the bathroom; she’s very impressed with herself. 🙂

Before I tell you about EB’s surgery, I want to update you on Mae. After five and a half hours, Mae finally came out of surgery.  The surgery went well, but she had a lot of bleeding and needed transfusions. Shauna said that wasn’t unexpected though.  The doctors told them that Mae had significant pressure on her brain, so the operation was very much needed. I checked Instagram right before I started this post and they had taken her breathing tube out. Please continue to pray for her recovery.

As for EB, we have to be at the Callahan Eye Hospital at 6:30 in the morning. I think EB is supposed to be the first surgery scheduled. The plan for tomorrow is to cut open her eyelid since it’s fused together, and then place an expander underneath. Dr. Scruggs said the first step will be to stretch her eyelid because it’s so much smaller than her good eye. She told us the expander is made of a hydro-gel material and will work like a sponge to absorb the natural fluids in her eye and obviously begin to expand and stretch the eyelid. Dr. Scruggs will  then sew her eyelid back shut so the expander will stay in.

I had several more things to write about the procedure, but the bright light of the laptop is keeping EB from going to sleep and she’s already not a happy camper in her “bed” (poor thing is in a pack-n-play).

I’ll wrap up now with a few specifics to pray for:

  • Pray that she won’t have a negative reaction to the anesthesia
  • That they will change their minds and let us go back when she gets her IV
  • Pray that Dr. Scruggs will be able to get the expander in
  • That the surgery will go smoothly and for wisdom and discernment for Dr. Scruggs
  • Pray that the expander will stay in and for no infections

I hope this post didn’t sound like a rambling mess. If it does, I’ll just blame Jeremy for never posting himself. 🙂 I’ll try to update again tomorrow!
